A couple of weeks ago we packed our bags and hit the airport for Malaga in the South of Spain to visit RoostDH.
For those of you who don’t know – Malaga is on the Costa del Sol in Southern Spain. Whilst the area is synonymous for Irish Bars, Brits abroad and package holidays you don’t have to go far out of town to find a stunningly beautiful country. It’s a great place to visit and once you escape the madness of the coast you’ll find super friendly and warm people, great food, some of the best beaches in Europe and beautiful, rugged mountains.
The guys at RoostDH have tapped in on how great the area is and hunted out hundreds of downhill and all mountain trails within an hour of Malaga. Don’t be fooled by the slow pace of life in the Spanish countryside – the riding is wild.
If you like hammering long, dry, dusty runs that are grizzling top to bottom with rocks of all shapes and sharpnesses then this is definitely the place for you. You can ride 5 minute race tracks in the morning that end on the beach … and then 20 minute long enduro epics in the afternoon that finish in the city. If you’re really pushing hard you can surf and snow-board all in the same day too.
We jetted out to see RoostDH for a week of trails and sun as a way to launch our 2012 downhill team. Given how close it is to the UK and the massive amount of challenging riding it was the perfect place for winter training. Add to that the fact that Roost have a fully kitted out workshop, are trained suspension technicians/mechanics, have a super efficient and bike friendly uplift AND that they have pretty much the flyest chalet we’ve ever stayed in … it all made for a pretty much perfect way to start the year.
Thanks to Ben and Mal for making this trip happen and to the riders for making it what it is. That’s Rich Thomas, Jay Williamson, Taylor Vernon, Tom Lloyd, Grant Boyce, Matt Wragg, Harry Heath, Mark Scott and James Metcalf.
Last but not least thanks to Jacob Gibbins for hand crafting this sunny, dusty edit. I can almost take the cervezas again just watching it!
Look out for the full write up in Wideopenmag issue 18!
