October 14th, 2009

FF_RACE09The Descend Hamsterly team are putting on their ‘Fast and Furious’ event on 24/25th October. They’ll have uplifts, cash prizes, 3 runs per racer and BC points. At £47 quid for the whole lot it could well be the best value for money race of the year.

hey dudes nice site. its cool that there are good things out there that are free for a change. good job.
i’m 17 and wanting to start downhilling for fun mainly, yet all these races seem serious, i don’t want to turn up and get merked by a 10 year old, so were can i start.

Hey fella – glad you like it!

I think races can seem a bit serious when you’ve not done one but usually all that matters is how serious you and your mates are taking it!

There’s always a few fast boys who are there to win… but most people are just there to have a laugh, ride a new track, chat rubbish and get the best time they can. My advice would be to just pick a race you can afford, get a couple of mates together and go along for a laugh. It’s only as serious as you make it to be honest!

The Hamsterley race looks like a really good one for value for money. The mini-dh races also look good – especially for first time racers. They’re really mellow and fun. I’d also REALLY recommend the Pearce Cycles series. I started racing at Pearce races and they’re spot on whether you’re a seasoned pro or a newbie.

I suppose it depends where you live and how far you can travel? Where do you live?

Basically – don’t stress – just get out and have a crack at your first race. Guarantee you’ll have a laugh.

nice one. thats helped a great deal, i think i’ll give the mini downhill ago, cos it doesn’t seem that you need a serious dh bike, although its a long way to go (from Beverely East Yorkshire)it seems like a blast and then i might see what my times are like whether i put a custard pie in my face or enter some more races, cheers anyway dudes and i might see you there!

Hey Tom – that IS a long way – I’d give the Hamsterly race a go if you can – It’ll be much closer and should still be nice and chilled out.

What bike have you got at the moment?

yer suppose so. Turns out my dad works has found theres a guy who’s son andrew wright is riding with steve peat, in that team of young downhillers, i think josh bryceland was in it. anyway, he said that him and his son are going up to warncliffe, to ride on saturday!!!!
at the moment i am riding a norco fluid lt3 cos i sort of ride trail centres. however tomorrow i am laying my grubby mitts on a 010 giant faith. then it should be on to hamsterley, it makes sense really, like you say, forest of dean is a fair distance but we’ll see!

Ha – Anyway – let us know how you get on. You should definitely write us a race report for the mag if you make it to your first race pretty soon!

Email me your address to jamie@wideopenmag.co.uk and i’ll post ya some stickers to put on your new bike!

    Good luck!
