Severed Alliance – Wideopen exclusive

A couple of weeks ago I got a mysterious email from a guy called ‘Will Notsay’ from something called ‘Severed Alliance’. Funnily enough he didn’t say much (get it?) but attached a pic of an equally mysterious, black hardtail frame that he reckoned weighed in at  an impressive 4.7 lbs. Probably more impressive was his follow up email with some very interesting tubing that he’s been working on with the guys in the Far East… More on that in a second.

He’s still keeping his cards pretty close to his chest but with a prototype frame, forks and stem on the go and a patent sorted on the tubing he’s agreed to let us give you all a teaser of what’s what.

Introducing the mysterious ‘Severed Alliance’…

Who and what is Severed Alliance?

Severd Alliance is a group of riders who are pretty unhappy with how some of the mtb scene has been recently. We feel that BMX has really progressed over the last 5 years or so in terms of the riding and more so the parts and we thought it was time to step things up a bit.

Tell us about the parts that are available…
There are no parts available yet and not for any time soon either but we are working on frames, bars, forks, cranks, stems.

So what made you start all this?
Well I used to work for a bmx/mtb company producing frames, bars and forks but I got bagged off from them for doing the right thing. I felt like my heart and soul went into that company and the alliance I once had with them was ripped apart.

Since then I’ve been working closely with a guy out in the Far East who make tubes for many bike and motor bike – BMW being one of them. His knowledge of metal is outstanding and I admire him loads, how ever the tubing photo and specs will have to stay with jamie @wideopen for a while until the patent is well and truly fixed as some big red neck company have seen it out there and taken it for themselves. Their time will come, in a few weeks, ha.

Tell us about the design and testing process…
Testing so far is going well but its early days yet and im sure there will be changes and tweaks to everything.

What can we expect from Severed Alliance in the future…?
I have no idea what’s going to happen in the future but one thing we do know is we will be keeping it real.

The Severed Alliance proto street frame:

Here’s the 1st prototype of the frame that apparently clocks in at 4.7lbs. After a heap of testing ‘Will’ reckons they’re going to get rid of the downtube gusset and swap it with an internal machine downtube gusset. He reckons this will drop the weight down to 4.5lbs.  As a guide a DMR Rhythm 24″ weighs about 5.7 lbs and a pretty light BMX – for example – the Fit Dakota Roche sig frame weighs in at about 4.2 lbs.

Severed Alliance stem:
proto-stem1

22.2 diameter, 45mm extension, 196grams weight. Pretty obvious how it works. Looks trick.

Severed Alliance rigid fork:

proto-fork1

Comes with flutted steerer tube and patented tube legs, threaded steerer tube and top cap, integrated race.
Spec weight approx 2.1lb but this is tbc
Axle to crown 445mm
Rake 35 degrees
Peg friendly

…And last but not least, Severed Alliance’s patented new tubing:

The snap shows a profile shot of the inside of the new tubing which will be used on the frame and forks. It’s apparently 30% stronger than double butted tubing.  Looks trick and makes your bike strong like bull. Shame you won’t see it when your frame is built up!  This is the tubing that ‘Will’ talks about above and has been fighting to patent.

That’s it for now. Thanks to SEVERED ALLIANCE for giving Wideopen another exclusive. We’ll be keeping a very close eye on this stuff as it develops. Fingers crossed it lives up to the hype….

Let us know what you think about the new kit on the comments….
