Tested : Lucho Dillitos Bocadillo | An alternative energy food.

Colombia is renowned for a certain type of stimulant, but one that is unlikely to be that good whilst out on the trail or for a run in with the authorities.

Team Wideopenmag’s Chris Hutchens tests some Colombian energy food, without the illegalities, in the Lucho Dillitos Bocadillo.

When the guys at Lucho Dillitos contacted me I was intrigued by the product and concept.

Honestly though, when I think of a Columbian foodstuff I don’t think performance. Maybe energy and a go get it feeling! Bocadillo is Columbia’s original energy bar and I was excited to try them. Built on tradition and the use of an environmentally friendly wrapper there was real potential.

In Columbia cyclists have been using the Bocadillo for years. Stuffing 1 or 2 into their jerseys before going for a ride. This is a bar and gel wrapped into one and are made from solid blocks of guava paste.

Tried and tested. Not to everyone’s taste but a unique product which will suit a lot of riders out there.

These come neatly wrapped in a biodegradable leaf wrapper so you can technically eat, dispose of the wrapper, and let mother nature decompose it. I took mine home but how many times have you been riding along and a wrapper drops from your pocket and gets blown away. This is a superb element of the product.

A number of flavours are available from the Classic Bocadillos to those with coffee and another with raspberry in. Over the past few months I’ve tried this out with a few different people and the guava with coffee Bocadillos seemed to come out on top. I was a big fan of the raspberry, sweet and powerful but not too overpowering. You’ll just need to try some of this for yourself to make a decision but they sell a trilogy pack giving you a fantastic discounted price for the 3 flavours.

On the trail they packed away neatly and definitely gave you a superb energy boost when you needed it. They stomached nicely but it’s not for everyone. Some people found it a little sweet and the consistency a little uniform. It’s neither soft or hard but a sugary, grainy consistency. I was a fan and it got me home after a few hard road rides. If you need a pick up then Lucho Dillitos is a winner. It also hits the environmental credentials!

These are neat little parcels of energy – perfect for the trail. The coffee one came out on top for me!
